What you are actually paying for
Most quotes bundle four different things: strategy, production, media management and ad spend. Strategy is thinking time. Production is the shooting and designing. Media management is running the ad accounts. Ad spend is money that goes to Google or Meta, not the agency. When a quote does not separate these, you cannot tell whether you are paying for work or for a markup on your own spend.
The honest market range
For a small business in Tamil Nadu, a content-and-social retainer runs roughly ₹15,000–25,000 a month. Add SEO and paid ads and you are in the ₹40,000–70,000 range. Full brand builds with film production are project-priced, usually ₹1.5 lakh and up depending on shoot days. Anything below ₹10,000 a month is either template posting or a freelancer stretched across too many clients.
The markup question
Ask one question before signing: do I pay Google and Meta directly, or does the agency pay and bill me? If the agency pays, ask what percentage they add. A 15–20% markup on a ₹1 lakh monthly spend is ₹15,000–20,000 leaving your business every month for nothing. Paying the platforms directly also means the ad account, the audience data and the campaign history stay yours.
What should be in writing
Deliverables with numbers, not adjectives. “Regular content” means nothing; “20 posts and 10 reels a month, two shoot days” means something. Fix the fee, fix the notice period, and confirm in writing that files and ad accounts belong to you.
