Google Now Answers in Tamil — And Almost No Business in Tamil Nadu Is Ready

AI Mode supports Tamil. India is Google's biggest market for voice and visual search. The queries are longer and spoken. Here is what that changes about your website.

What actually happened

In October 2025 Google extended AI Mode — its conversational search experience — to eight more Indian languages. Tamil was one of them.

On the same day, Google launched Search Live in India: search by voice and camera, conversationally. India was the first country outside the United States to get it.

Google's own statement in that announcement is the part worth reading twice: India is its largest global user base for both voice search and visual search.

Not a growing market. The largest.

Google also notes that queries in AI Mode run roughly three times longer than traditional search queries.

Why three times longer changes everything

People type short and speak long. Nobody says "SEO Chennai" out loud to their phone.

They say something closer to: Chennai la chinna business ku digital marketing agency evlo charge pannuvaanga?

Or in English: how much does a digital marketing agency in Chennai charge for a small business?

Two consequences follow, and both are practical:

  • Your content has to answer whole questions, not match keywords. A page stuffed with "digital marketing Chennai" has nothing to say to a spoken question.
  • The question contains its own qualifiers — small business, Chennai, price. The traffic is better because the intent is clearer.

What to do about it on your site

This is reasoned practice, not a proven formula — AI search is new enough that anyone selling you a guaranteed method is selling you something. But the logic holds and it costs nothing to follow.

  • Write real questions as your headings. Not "Pricing" but "How much does an interior designer in Chennai cost?" The heading should be the question a customer would actually speak.
  • Answer in the first two sentences. Then explain. An answer buried in paragraph six is not an answer.
  • Use plain numbers. "Between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 a month" is quotable. "Competitive rates" is not.
  • Write a genuine FAQ — the ten questions customers actually ask you on the phone, answered honestly, including the awkward ones about price.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete and current. Local answers lean heavily on it.

The Tamil question

Should you publish in Tamil?

Honest answer: it depends on who buys from you.

If your customers are consumers — a salon, a clinic, a shop, a tuition centre, a local service — then yes, and the opportunity is wide open. Tamil AI Mode is live, Tamil voice search is live, and the amount of good Tamil business content on the web is small.

If you sell B2B to procurement teams and company owners, those searches still run largely in English. Do not translate your site out of enthusiasm.

And if you do write in Tamil: write in Tamil, do not translate into it. A translated English campaign reads correct and lands flat. The joke changes, the proof changes, the objection changes. That is a strategy decision, not a language one.

Why this is worth doing now

Most of your competitors in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai are still buying keyword-stuffed pages from someone who learnt SEO in 2018.

Meanwhile the largest voice-search market on earth is asking Google full questions in Tamil, and getting answers from whoever bothered to write them.

This window does not stay open. In two years every agency will sell "AI search optimisation" at a premium. Right now it is just writing honest answers to real questions, which you can do yourself this weekend.
