Your WhatsApp Business Account Stops Working on 1 January 2027 Unless You Do This
Meta is forcing Indian businesses onto rupee billing by 31 December 2026. Miss it and your messages stop. Plus: the pricing most Indian agencies still explain wrongly.

The deadline, plainly
If you use the WhatsApp Business API — through a provider, a CRM, or your own setup — your account must be migrated to INR billing by 31 December 2026.
Meta stops delivering messages from non-INR accounts on 1 January 2027.
Not throttled. Not warned. Stopped.
If WhatsApp is where your leads and your customer conversations live — and for most Tamil Nadu businesses it is — this is the single most consequential date on your calendar this quarter. Call your provider this week and get written confirmation that your account is on rupee billing. Do not accept a verbal yes.
Note this applies to the API, used through a provider or CRM. If you simply use the free WhatsApp Business app on a phone, this does not affect you.
The thing almost every Indian agency still gets wrong
You will still find agencies and blog posts explaining WhatsApp pricing "per conversation" — a 24-hour window, one charge.
That model was deprecated on 1 July 2025. Pricing has been per message for well over a year.
This is not pedantry. If your agency is budgeting your campaigns on a conversation model that no longer exists, your projected costs are wrong, and you will find out at the invoice.
Ask whoever runs your WhatsApp: is this priced per message or per conversation? If they say conversation, they have not read Meta's documentation since mid-2025. Draw your own conclusion about what else they have not read.
What it costs
Meta publishes India rates in a linked rate card rather than on the page itself, so treat the figures below as reported by business solution providers — multiple independent providers quote them identically, but they are not lifted from a Meta web page.
- Marketing — around ₹0.86 per message
- Utility (order updates, reminders) — around ₹0.12
- Authentication (OTPs, domestic) — around ₹0.12
- Service (replies in a customer-initiated conversation) — around ₹0.12 after the free allowance
Add 18% GST on top of all of it.
The marketing rate rose roughly 10% on 1 January 2026. Budget on the assumption that it rises again.
Service messages are no longer free
This is the change most businesses have not noticed. From 1 October 2026, service messages became chargeable beyond a free allowance, globally. Utility messages inside an open customer-service window also became chargeable. Both used to be free.
The free allowance is 1,000 service messages per business phone number per month. No rollover. Charging starts at the 1,001st.
For a small business answering a few dozen enquiries a month, 1,000 is plenty. For anyone running volume customer support on WhatsApp, this is a new line in the budget that did not exist before October.
There was also a requirement to have a payment method on file by 30 September 2026 — without one, service messages can stop after the free tier. Check this today if you have not.
The free window nobody uses properly
Here is the part worth actual money.
When someone clicks a Click-to-WhatsApp ad and messages you, that opens a 7-day free entry point window. Marketing, utility, authentication and service messages inside that window are not charged.
Seven days. Free. Per lead.
Most businesses running Click-to-WhatsApp ads send one reply and let the thread die. The window stays open for a week and costs nothing to use.
What to do with it:
- Reply immediately — the first message should arrive in minutes, not hours
- Send the quote, the catalogue, the price list — whatever moves the decision
- Follow up on day two and day four if they have gone quiet
- Send the booking or site-visit confirmation inside the window
Businesses paying for every message they send are sitting on seven free days per lead and not using them. Fix that before you optimise anything else.
What to do this month
- Confirm in writing that your account is migrating to INR billing before 31 December 2026
- Confirm a payment method is on file
- Ask your provider whether they bill you per message or per conversation — and what markup they add
- Audit your Click-to-WhatsApp follow-up: are you using the free 7-day window, or one reply and done?
- Move your routine order updates to utility templates — at roughly ₹0.12 against ₹0.86, the category you send in matters
The deadline is the urgent one. The free window is the profitable one.
